We want to create a NEW PROJECT
A dialog box will pop up...
In the Project Name box...type

(Joe Smith OBJECT MASK)

Click the arrow to the right of the location box

Go to Desktop>

Object Mask (The folder we just created!)
Import the Skateboarder.MP4 file into Your Premiere Pro
It should be in your Videography folder!
Shortcut: You can also press Alt+Shift+7
Click Window tab on top
Select WORKSPACE
Select EFFECTS
Now drag the clip from the bin to the timeline
Press the = key to zoom in!
(this is an alternative to moving the bottom slider)
I have scrubbed to about 4:16
Scrub (move the blue playhead to advance the video) through the timeline to find a good frame where the skateboarder is clearly visible...ideally with all of the limbs showing.
TIP: the stronger the silhouette, the better the mask!
I have scrubbed to about 4:16
Make sure the CLIP is selected:
Now let's grab the Object Masking Tool from the Toolbar!
With the Object Masking Tool, hover over the skateboarder, and you'll see a RED overlay preview.
Click on it to create the mask!
Object Mask Data Storage
Masks are stored externally in a folder. Do NOT move or touch these files!
CLICK OK!
If the skateboard is not included with the mask...
just click on the skateboard and it will be added to the mask!
(If we wanted to remove the skateboard or a part of the item, simply hold the ALT key down and click that part)
EFFECTS CONTROL PANEL
On the left, select Effect Controls tab
Under Unassigned Masks, you'll see your Object Mask (01) layer.
Click the Track forward and backward button in the middle to analyze the entire clip in both directions.
(The other buttons here are to track forward only, or backwards only, or frame by frame.)
And pretty quickly, Premiere tracks your subject, click magic, frame by frame.
That's the AI doing the heavy lifting while you sit back and watch!
Add text and build your layer stack
Move the playhead back to the beginning and select the clip
Make sure NO clips are selected!
Now let's add some text...
Grab the Type tool in the timeline toolbar, click in the Program window and type SKATEBOARDING.
I used Myriad Pro Bold white
On the right in the Properties panel, resize it, reposition it, change the font and use the pool as your visual guide to center it in the frame.
Right now, the text sits on top, but we want it behind the skater.
Press the Alt key on your keyboard and drag your video layer from V1 to V3 to duplicate it.
Object mask in the OPACITY folder:
With the video clip on V3 selected...
go to the Effect Controls panel and drag your Object Mask layer from Unassigned Masks into Opacity.
Now you've built a clean layer stack: masked skater on top, text in the middle, original video on the bottom.
This creates a nice text sandwich where the text appears behind your subject, but on top of your background - clean, quick, professional.
What once took tedious manual rotoscoping now just takes a few clicks.
There are so many ways to apply this look to raise the production value of your next video.
And now you can do it all without leaving Premiere.
