Color Correction
WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Color Correction & Grading!
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Color grading is important in videography because it establishes mood and style, ensures visual consistency across scenes, and enhances the overall aesthetic of a video. It involves both fixing technical issues to make the footage look natural (color correction) and using creative adjustments to shape the look and evoke specific emotions in the viewer.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: Today we will practice color correcting clips in a file!
Let's open Adobe Premiere Pro!
At the bottom of your screen click in the search bar and tyep PREMIERE.
Then click on the Adobe Premiere ICON or Click OPEN
Since we began a project it should be in the list (click on it!) or we can select OPEN PROJECT and navigate to our project!
(Your Initials) COLOR 1
Make basic color adjustments
Use the Lumetri Color panel to make basic color adjustments and add a look to your project!
In the timeline, select the first clip
Let's open the Lumetri Color panel
Go to the Window tab
Select Lumetri Color.
The Lumetri Color panel is now on the right!
Open the Basic Correction tab
Before pressing AUTO:
After pressing AUTO:
The Auto button is often a great starting point for making further adjustments.
Once pressed, you should see that many, if not all, of the sliders in the Color and Light sections have changed.
If you're happy with these settings, then that's all you need to do.
If you're not sure what a particular slider does, just drag it back and forth and you'll quickly be able to see the effect it makes.
You can always use Ctrl+Z to undo your last change.
But what if we want to make a few more changes?
To adjust the Exposure slightly, bring up the Shadows, or increase the Contrast a bit more, let's look at the sliders.
Another automatic color adjustment you can make to your clips is to apply what Premiere calls a Creative Look.
You're probably familiar with Photo Filters (like on Instagram or TikTok), and Creative Looks in Premiere Pro are very similar.
Click the > to open the CREATIVE tab on the right
In the Creative section, you will see a dropdown menu that includes dozens of available looks you can use depending on the vision of your project.
Use the arrows on either side of the Preview window to review the different looks.
When you find a look you like, just click the thumbnail preview image to apply it to your clip.
Once you have applied a look, you can also adjust the Intensity slider if you want a more subtle or extreme version of that look.
Review...
Color correction is used to ensure the consistent colors across your footage adjust for lighting and address unwanted color casts.
The Auto button is a great place to start with your color corrections, but you can always adjust the sliders further to perfect it.
You can also add specific looks in the Creative section to give your project an artistic feel.
Saving a preset...
In the Lumetri Color panel, click the 3 lines by "Lumetri Color"
Select "SAVE PRESET"
Name the Preset!
Name it something to remember if you want to use it again and again (if you like it!)
Click OK
Applying a preset...
On the right panel click Effects
Drag the preset onto the other clips!
Now...
Color correct the remaining clips!
Select each clip and color correct!
