WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Editing Videos.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Learning to edit videos properly is important for crafting engaging visual stories, enhancing quality, conveying specific moods, and ensuring professional presentation across various platforms. Proper editing transforms raw footage into polished content, improving technical quality through smooth pacing and audio, while also developing crucial skills like storytelling, technical proficiency, and attention to detail valuable for careers in media, marketing, or personal projects.

Get to know ADOBE PREMIERE

This quick lesson will introduce you to the Premiere Pro workspace so you can begin your first project.

Create a project and import a clip

Get familiar with the workspace and how to create new projects.

ZIP files contain one or more files compressed with ZIP compression.

ZIP is format that supports lossless data compression.

We need to grab a few files first!

Click the ZIP Image on the left!

We'll go import these files soon!

Zip files typically will not show you the contents (but there are exceptions!)

Left click the DOWNLOAD button on the top right

This will save the file to your Videography (or downloads) folder!

Open your Videography folder!

RIGHT click the ZIP folder

Select EXTRACT ALL

Click EXTRACT (at the bottom)

*Files will now be a folder in your Videography folder!

Double click the folder to open it!

Before you open Premiere, remember to be organized and have your Footage and Audio in the right places!

Keeping the unzipped FOOTAGE folder open (move it to the side), Open YOUR VIDEOGRAPHY FOLDER AGAIN...

Before ANY NEW PROJECT, we need to create a new Video Project Folder...

We need a new Video Project folder...

RIGHT click on the

Video Project Template_COPY ME folder Select COPY

You can also just select the folder, (don't open it) and on your keyboard press Ctrl + C (Copy)

Now RIGHT click in the white area inside the Videography folder and select PASTE

You can also just click in the white area and on your keyboard press Ctrl + C (Paste)

A COPY was made of the folder (should have the word _Copy at the end!)

Now we just need to RENAME this folder!

Did you know when a file or folder 's name is highlighted BLUE you can simply start typing to rename it! (hint: don't press delete!)

Right click the copied folder and select RENAME

Name the folder: TUTORIAL 1

We will be using this folder!

Open the new Tutorial 1 folder by double clicking on it!

Open the ASSETS folder by double clicking on it!

Now drag the FOOTAGE folder that is in your Videography Folder into the ASSETS Folder!

*it should replace the FOOTAGE folder! (If you open it you will see 6 clips)

Whenever we have Footage for our projects, the media MUST go into a new (copied and renamed) Video Project Folder...inside Assets then inside FOOTAGE!

Let's open Adobe Premiere Pro!

At the bottom of your screen click in the search bar and tyep PREMIERE.

Then click on the Adobe Premiere ICON or Click OPEN

Right click the Premiere icon at the bottom of your screen and PIN TO TASKBAR!

Premiere opens up it presents you with this screen and in here you can find all your most recent projects.

Of course if this is your first time using Premiere you won't have any.

We want to create a NEW PROJECT

A dialog box will pop up...

In the Project Name box...type

First Initial Last Initial TUTORIAL 1

Example: JS Tutorial 1

(Joe Smith Tutorial 1)

LOCATION

Click the arrow to the right of the location box

Select CHOOSE LOCATION

Go to Desktop>

Videography>

TUTORIAL 1>

PROJECTS

On the left choose:

DESKTOP>

Videography> Tutorial 1> PROJECTS

Click SAVE

Do NOT put it in the ASSETS Folder!

Whenever we have a New Premiere Project, the file MUST go into a new (copied and renamed) Video Project Folder...inside PROJECTS!

Click CREATE (Bottom right)

In the new window, click SKIP (Bottom right)

We will be importing our media another way!

Please do NOT import any files yet!!!

We will be working with the files we downloaded soon!

This quick lesson will introduce you to the Premiere Pro workspace so you can begin your first project.

Before you can begin crafting your story, you’ll want to understand how the interface is set up. Let me show you around!

This is what Premiere Pro looks like when you first open a project.

To support you as you create your video project, the interface is divided into sections called panels, and each panel serves a different purpose during your edit.

Let’s start with the Project panel. This acts as your media organizer. It’s where imported clips, music, and other elements reside.

If you double click on any of the clips in the Project panel, they’ll open in the Source monitor where you can review them more easily. Some of the controls in the Source monitor should look familiar.

There’s a Play and a Stop button and a Timeline that shows progress through the clip as you play it.

The blue line is called the Playhead, and you can drag it back and forth to preview the video quickly.

Once you’ve identified which of your clips you want to string together into your video, it’s time to add them into a sequence in the Timeline panel.

A sequence is where you’ll arrange all of your media into your video project. Think of it as like where you build out your video. You can add video clips, music, visual effects, and titles to your sequence.

When your clips and other media are added to the Timeline, you’ll be able to watch your sequence in the Program monitor. (it is the same place as te Source Monitor but there are tabs to toggle at the top!)

Just press Play. Similar to the Source monitor, your Timeline also has a blue line or Playhead, and as it moves along the Timeline, the exact moment of the sequence is shown in the Program monitor.

All Panels are modular, try moving panels around!

Now, because the interface is so customizable, sometimes things accidentally get a bit out of order.

If things ever get too crazy, just go to Window, then Workspaces and Reset to Saved Layout. It will go right back to where you started.

There are many other panels like the Essential Sound panel for Audio editing, and Lumetri Color for color correction and grading, but generally the Project panel, the Source monitor, the Timeline, and the Program monitor are your go tos for every project!
