WHAT ARE WE LEARNING: Editing Videos.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT: Learning to edit videos properly is important for crafting engaging visual stories, enhancing quality, conveying specific moods, and ensuring professional presentation across various platforms. Proper editing transforms raw footage into polished content, improving technical quality through smooth pacing and audio, while also developing crucial skills like storytelling, technical proficiency, and attention to detail valuable for careers in media, marketing, or personal projects.
HOW WILL MY TEACHER KNOW WHAT I LEARNED: As the year progresses you will record and edit video projects with you team!
REMINDER: Whenever we have Footage for our projects, the media MUST go into a new (copied and renamed) Video Project Folder...inside Assets then inside FOOTAGE!
Let's open Adobe Premiere Pro!
At the bottom of your screen click in the search bar and tyep PREMIERE.
Then click on the Adobe Premiere ICON or Click OPEN
Right click the Premiere icon at the bottom of your screen and PIN TO TASKBAR!
Premiere opens up it presents you with this screen and in here you can find all your most recent projects.
Since we began a project it should be in the list (click on it!) or we can select OPEN PROJECT and navigate to our Tutorial project!
(Your Initials) Tutorial 1
Shortcut: You can also press Alt+Shift+7
Click Window tab on top
Select WORKSPACE
Select EFFECTS
RECAP: there are four main panels that you’ll use every time you edit a video:
The Project panel, which helps you organize and find your media
The Source monitor that shows you a preview of your clips selected from the Project panel.
The Timeline panel where you arrange your clips into the story you want to tell.
The Program monitor where you watch it all come together.
Shortcut: You can also press Alt+Shift+7
Click Window tab on top
Select WORKSPACE
Select EFFECTS
To get started, Premier is telling us we need to import some media.
Double click inside the Project Panel (or we can go under file and import)
Again go to DESKTOP>
Videography> Tutorial 1> ASSETS
We could open the FOOTAGE folder and choose the footage individually
or simply select the FOOTAGE folder and click IMPORT FOLDER!
This is also how we could add audio clips or other Media files...or ASSETS!
Now that the files have been IMPORTED, we should see the folder in the Project Panel
In Premiere language it is called a BIN
PROJECT PANEL TIP!
List view
Icon View
Can't see the clips?
Change the view at the bottom of the panel by clicking on List or Icon View!
When you double click the BIN you should now see the imported footage.
And if you click to select one you can actually preview what the clip looks like!
Next, we need to find a clip we want to start importing...
We could just drag them into the timeline or
we can DOUBLE click on one to open it in the Source Monitor...
All Panels are modular, so when you are comfortable with the program you might move each panel to where it is easier for you!
Double click on one of the clips
Click on the ORDERING.mp4 clip
Now it is in the Source Panel
Note: It isn't in our timeline yet, we are just taking a look at it
IN and Out (not the restaurant!)
Source Panel Section...playhead moved to the right
As we are looking at the clip in the Source Panel, we can do a little editing here if we need to.
Move the PLAYHEAD (the Blue marker) back and forth
The video should run back and forth
MARK IN
Source Panel Section...playhead moved to the left (below)
Pressed "i" on keyboard or click { to mark IN! (below)
As I watch the clip I want to start the video where the lady is already at the counter
So I move the PLAYHEAD (the Blue marker) to the point I want to cut IN
To mark this point (or mark IN)...
Press "i" on the keyboard
This places the IN marker (we can also click the { under the timeline)
MARK OUT
Source Panel Section...playhead moved to the right (below)
Pressed "o" on keyboard or click { to mark OUT! (below)
Now perhaps I also want to end the clip early, same type of process...
So I move the PLAYHEAD (the Blue marker) to the point I want to cut OUT
To mark this point (or mark OUT)...
Press "o" on the keyboard
This places the OUT marker (we can also click the } under the timeline)
Now from here we can do a couple of things...
File>New>Sequence
We don't have a sequence created yet. A sequence is essentially what's going to contain your timeline and all the edits that you're doing.
You can either create a new sequence by going to File>New>Sequence
or.....
A quicker way...
Click on the video in the Source Panel and drag it onto the Timeline Panel and let go. It's going to create a sequence!
Adding the next few clips...
Go back to the Project Panel and add another clip from the BIN
Using the same instructions add:
Making espresso 02.mp4
Making espresso 03.mp4
Dripping espresso.mp4
Mark in and out as you want and add to the timeline!
TIMELINE PANEL TIP!
Timeline scroll bar can be adjusted to see more or less of the sequesnces!
Can't see the end of the sequences?
Pull on the right circle of the Timeline scroll bar to see more or less of the sequences!
What about Videos with Audio in Premiere...
Next we will add latte art.mp4
Go back to the Project Panel and Double click on the latte art.mp4 clip in the BIN
It should be in the Source panel now
For this clip, it has audio also
Sorry! The audio in this clip doesn't work but we can use the example!
Now if we look at the Source Panel closely, there are two icons under the clip image
One will "Drag ONLY VIDEO"
the other will "Drag ONLY AUDIO"
This is good when you want to separate the video from the audiobecause youo just don't need one or the other.
But look...
If we drag this clip to the timeline panel, there are two separate pices that split into different timelines
One is for V1 (a video timeline)
and the other A1 (an audio timeline)
Moving & Layering Sequences in Premiere...
MOVING
What if you put a sequence in the wrong spot?
Sequences can be draged and moved througout the timeline
Latte art on V2 ON...
Latte art on V2 toggled OFF...
LAYERING
When you stack sequences or layer, the one on top take precedence (meaning we se that clip not the once below)
But we can toggle these on and off by clicking the EYE to the left of the timeline row.
Audio Muted on A2...
MUTING AUDIO
Just like with the video clips, we can also MUTE audio tracks...
Toggle Audio on and off by clicking the M (Mute) to the left of the timeline row.
Move the latte art sequence back to row V1
Move it's Audio to A1
They should snap together!
Add the last clip...
Go back to the Project Panel and add the final clip from the BIN
Using the same instructions add:
Working 01.mp4
Mark in and out as you want and add to the timeline!
Make sure to click SAVE!
Premiere should AUTO SAVE! (but it might not be working)
SHORTCUT!
Press and hold the CTRL and ALT keys on your keyboard + the DELETE key (above the Backspace key!)
Please place HEADPHONES on your Monitors!
